History of the Orthodox Brotherhood - Fellowship of Venice

The historical path of the Greeks of Venice follows the trajectory of the “Adriatic point”. The cultural proximity of Venice to Byzantium, as Cardinal Bessarion pointed out, made Venice an attractive destination for the Greeks.

The presence of Greeks in the city of San Marco has its roots as early as the 10th century and increased during the 15th century, not only for political-economic but also for spiritual reasons, due to the flourishing of arts and letters in Italy in general.
